For our very first “Mixin’ With” Mixtape, we asked Jason and Tony from the New York band Hymns to give us their top ten best country or “other” songs list and this is the brilliant mix that they came up with. I encourage you to gather all these songs and let the Hymns guide you through their very own musical odyssey. In the coming weeks look for “Mixin’ With” mixes from Alana Amram, The Morning Pages and the Pierces among others!

Representing the best in Southern Style for the week of 1/12-1/18.

Last night before we partook in our weekly ritual of Country Night over at the Little Joy, we did a little pre-party karaoke-ing with my very own copy of “Ladies Night Country Karaoke: 330 + Songs”! We sang a little Patsy, a little Loretta, a little Emmylou, and a whole lot of Dolly. So that you may be able to share in the experience, I have included some karaoke videos below. So, grab your nearest and dearest friends and let em’ know how you feel by belting out these karaoke classics.
p.s. Do you love the videos that go along with the tracks as much as I do? We were in Koreatown at this little karaoke joint once, and the video to every single song had someone dying! One video was this guy who was contemplating jumping in front of a subway car, and then he DID….and the other was of a guy dying of some disease and the girl that he loved who was his best friend but didn’t love him back and then he died sad and alone. Try singing “Rocky Top” (always a showstopper) or “Sweet Home Alabama” to that. It’s very distracting

Fleet Foxes, one of the best bands to emerge out of the Seattle, Washington scene in the last couple of years (alongside Band of Horses, J. Tillman, Ben Gibbard’s many projects) , is about to sign to Sub Pop Records (they are possibly even in the process of doing so as I type this).
Lead singer Robin Pecknold told Washington’s the Stranger :
“Sub Pop will put out the record in North America, Japan, and Australia and
Bella Union (Beach House & Midlake’s European label) will put out the record in Europe/UK! It took a while to get all the lawyerly stuff figured out and get a more artist-friendly situation going but we are there now so it’s all ready to be signed and such! I think it will come out in late May or early June, but we’ve been recording an EP of five new songs out at Bear Creek to put out immediately after it’s finished (so early-mid Feb for the EP release), self-released.”
Fleet Foxes fit in perfectly on your playlist along with My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses, Jeff Buckley, even Pentangle. They are a little bit folk, a little bit country and a whole lot psychedelic, with harmony laden lullabies and odes to things like the Winter, Red Squirrels, and the Blue Ridge Mountains.
They will be crossing the country starting this February with Blitzen Trapper.
