Mixin’ With The Bees

When we asked Isle of Wight band the Bees (or The Band of Bees for those in America) to do a mixtape for us, we knew we would get something really interesting and eclectic considering that their own music is an intricate blend of country, sixties psychedelic pop, soul, reggae and funk. And that’s just what we got on their “Top 10 Tunes to Make Your Supper To” Mixtape. Where else would you hear the Flying Burrito Brothers paired with Meatloaf? So pick out one of our Shakin’ and Bakin’ Recipes, download this mixtape, and get a-cookin’!

Top 10 Tunes To Make Your Supper To:

1. Meatloaf – ‘Dead Ringer For Love’
2. Strawberry Alarm Clock – ‘incense and Peppermints’
3. The Jam – ‘A Town Called Malice’
4. Orange Juice – ‘Rip It Up’
5. Cream – ‘Strange Brew’
6. Chocolate Watch Band – ‘Uncle Morris’ [Editors note: They had said the album One Step Beyond, so we choose our favorite song off of it]
7. Vanilla Fudge – ‘Bang Bang’
8. Silver Apples – ‘I Have Known Love’
9. Captain Beefheart – ‘Ice Cream For Crow”
10. Flying Burrito Brothers – ‘Just Because’

[...] Those of you who have been reading When You Awake for a while will know that I have a big ol’ band crush on The Bees. Time and time again I have announced that I was FINALLY going to see them live (whether it was at SXSW or Coachella) only to be completely crushed when their names would magically disappear from the lineups just days before the event. But the Isle of Wight band is about to release a brand new record, Every Steps A Yes on October 11th via Fiction Records, which means they will be touring around the UK for the next two months. So after 7 years of waiting, I am making darn sure I get to see them. Watch out Bees. When You Awake is coming your way. Complete tour dates are after the jump–and if you missed the mixtape they made for us back in 2008, you can check that out by clicking here. [...]
