Last Night at the Little Joy
Filed under: Uncategorized | Posted by:

We stopped by the Little Joy last night to “throw back a couple of cold ones”. DJs Kristen and Willie spun the perfect mix of country classics (a little Gram…a little Waylon…a little bluegrass, etc). Up next week is DJ Dan C (see top friend)! We will be there, will you?

Our Valentine To You!
Filed under: Mixtapes,Original Mixtape Series | Posted by:

Happy Valentine’s Day my friends!!! We would like to offer you a very special mixtape made with love by the folks here at When You Awake! Everyone contributed and we have to say, we are quite proud of the outcome (and look at the original art made just for this mixtape! Thanks Mustafa). So…check it out. Let us know what you think!

We girls got together and thought about making a Valentine’s Mixtape. But
what would be the theme? Eternal Love? Heartbreak? Makeout Music? Get It On Music? So many options! So we started to think about Valentine’s Day
and what it means to us and what our favorite part of it is—and to our
surprise–we all agreed that our favorite part of Valentine’s Day is not the flowers and boxes of chocolates or the low light of the fancy restaurant where your date sweeps you off your feet…it is actually the morning after! Not to knock Valentine’s Day, but what’s better than waking up in your lover’s arms and just feeling happy and content (without any of the pressure to have the perfect romantic date/the right present/etc). So, this is our ode to the morning after…and to staying in bed all day with your loved one. We hope you enjoy it. So…Happy Morning After Valentine’s Day!! Love, WYA

Mixin’ With the Pierces: Valentine’s Week Edition
Filed under: Mixin' With Series,Mixtapes | Posted by:

To kick off Valentine’s Week, we asked New York based sister duo the Pierces (whose album “Thirteen Tales of Love and Revenge” was one of When You Awake’s Best Albums of 2007) to give us a mixtape! The result is made up of their favorite Country Songs Of Love and Revenge, beause everyone knows that love is sweet…but sometimes, revenge can be even sweeter (especially when served with a little twang).

YouTube Preview ImageUncle Tupelo- Whiskey Bottle

Looking for something simple yet rich in chocolate-y goodness?
Try this tempting dish, devilishly easy and sinfully good. No doubt you’ll struggle to resist eating it all in one go! I say pair it with a little Uncle Tupelo and go ahead, just this once:)

In Living Colour: Black Mountain and Howlin’ Rain
Filed under: In Living Color | Posted by:

We went to the Troubadour last night to check out the Black Mountain/Howlin’ Rain show. Black Mountain played a solid set, but it was Ethan Miller, the lead singer of Howlin’ Rain (and Comets on Fire) that really caught our attention. He was one of the most engaging live performers that I’ve seen in a long, long time- screaming, wailing and shredding on the guitar. He’s really a sight to be been! Check out photos of Howlin’ Rain below:

Shakin’ it Down at Jimmy’s Lounge

Last night we stopped by Jimmy’s Lounge for our friend’s club night PYT (Pretty Young Things). We were rolling in free vodka (oh, if only it were whiskey) and then hit the dance floor. Here are the photos:

Chatting Up Bodies of Water
Filed under: News | Posted by:

Highland Park band Bodies of Water are playing the Echo tonight with the Castanets. To get to know this lovely foursome, we asked them some questions that have no doubt been on your mind.

When You Awake: If you weren’t “Bodies of Water”, what would you be?
Bodies of Water: Maybe “black animal”.

WYA: If you had a mascot, what would it be?
BOW: Probably our 3 dogs.

WYA: What kind of dancing would you like to see in the crowd?
BOW: It would be so great if folks busted out some traditional African dancing. That or the way very young children dance.

WYA: What kind of beverage goes best with your music?
BOW: Beer. Or water.

WYA: Who would you love to have cover your music?
BOW: Karl Blau.

WYA: If you had a comic or cartoon after you, what sort of shenanigans would the characters get into?
BOW: I’m imagining the characters all crammed in a little van on tour in various towns going to a bunch of thrift stores and buying way more stuff than they can fit in the van. We seem to accumulate a bunch of junk whenever we go out of town. That or going to shady eating establishments and all getting food poisoning but still playing shows. It would be funny to see everyone really ill, running back and forth to the bathroom during and between songs.

WYA: Where’s your favorite place to perform?
BOW: We’ve had our most fun shows in the the New York area. In LA, we like playing at the Echo.

WYA: What’s your favorite thing to do after a show?
BOW: Drink the free beer the venue gives us and talk to people and then go to Del Taco.

WYA: What living artist or band do you dream to perform with?
BOW: This is tricky, I want to say bands that I really like and would like to watch but I’m not sure if they would be a good match for us to actually play with. Good match, shmood match. Antony and the Johnsons or Willie Nelson (we’d be his backing band) or maybe Hot Chip? That would be crazy.

WYA: In the spirit of Valentines Day coming up, what is your favorite love song?
BOW: ‘I Want to Be With You Always’ by Lefty Frizzell

WYA: What is your favorite body of water?
BOW: The Mediterranean Ocean around southwest Italy. Or any baby pool in a friends backyard when its real hot out.

WYA: How many times has someone asked you what your favorite body of water is?
BOW: Maybe like 4 times.

WYA: Anything you’d like to say to fans?
BOW: Try and live each and every moment for what it is. Don’t waste this one by spending it thinking of the next (I’m always telling myself this.)

The band, who just released their first album on Secretly Canadian, will be heading out on tour (after the Echo show) with Glasgow quartet Sons and Daughters and will even be playing a couple of shows with one of our personal favorites, Phosphorescent. Click read more to check out the dates.
