I ran into Alex Brown Church of Sea Wolf as we were waiting for tables at the East Sport Cafe yesterday. He was fueling up before heading off to play two showcases. We chatted about SXSW (he claims that this year was by far his best SXSW experience because it was so quick and easy) and our mutual friends back in LA (my friend plays bass for him on occasion). I also ran into the guys of CB Brand and Devotchka there. Apparently the promise of free food, jeans, headphones and other gear made it the place to be.
Sea Wolf- You’re A Wolf
The website that everyone loves to hate, Pitchfork Media, actually pulled off an amazing party yesterday at Emos. So for once, I must say, well done Pitchfork! I think that the event, which featured Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, and Yeasayer, is actually going to win my “Favorite Lineup of SXSW” award. The bands worked so well sonically together and created the perfect Friday afternoon chill out experience.
I also got the chance to chat with Justin Vernon (aka Bon Iver) after his set and I have to say that he was one of the most gracious and friendly musicians that I have met in a long time: a stark contrast to his haunting, lonesome and other-worldly yet incredibly beautiful music.
We talked about a number of things including his tattoos, which he claims don’t actually mean anything and that he got them when he was completely hammered. He just pointed to different signs at the tattoo parlor and was like…that one…ok…now that one. Anyways, we are definitely going to check out his show in LA next week with Phosphorescent and if you are in LA, I seriously recommend that you do too.
I spent most of yesterday at the Fader Fort waiting to see the Lou Reed tribute show (by the time it started the line outside was two blocks long…good thing I came early!). Sadly, the attire of choice there wasn’t quite appropriate for the site (lots of neon, screen prints, one of a kind kicks …you get the idea). However, I did manage to find a couple of country folk in the sea of Street Wear. Check ’em out below. p.s. The blond guy with the feather in his hair spent a lot of time at sea and actually found those Seagull feathers on his boat. He promised that he washed them extensively before putting them in his hair though.

Most of these photos were snapped at the Pitchfork Party with Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Yeasayer and more! As you can see, boots were on my mind.
I landed in Austin yesterday and immediately headed over to the Enchanted Forest (an outdoor art co-op space) to see the Clean Air Clean Stars show. I caught Jonathan Wilson, Young Lords and CB Brand. The space wasn’t the best for sound (two stages with the quieter bands being completely overpowered by the loud roaring bands on the other stage), but it was still pretty amazing to all of those bands in a forest setting.
When You Awake’s FREE picks for Wednesday. In general, unless there is an amazingly good showcase, I am just going to be covering the free side parties…because who really wants to put down $600 for a badge when you can see all of the bands that are playing shows on the side anyways (sorry to my friends who work at SXSW…I still love you).
Clean Air Clean Stars:
This show is the real reason that I decided to show up in Austin on Wednesday. Jonathan Wilson, CB Brand, Young Lords, Headdress. This is the place to be!
Gonna Get Down 3:
All of these country style finds are from the Enchanted Forest.
In honor of the music world descending on Texas today, I decided to ask my favorite Austin band, Golden Bear, to do a mixtape for us. The guys graciously agreed and here is the fruit of their labor. The group, who claims to be “Galactic Forest Rock,” put together a list of the Top 10 Songs to Make A Comeback To. Check it out after the jump, and if you are in Austin, make sure you catch these local favorites at one of their two shows.
New York band the Young Lords put together an Outlaw Blues Mixtape for us, cause sometimes even outlaws get the blues. With some Merle, Waylon and Johnny Paycheck, this mixtape will really get you feelin’ for these hardened men…rebels on the outside, hurting boys on the inside. For those of you who are going to be down at SXSW, you will also have SEVEN chances to see the Young Lords in action. We will definitely be at the Clean Air, Clean Stars show shaking it down with the Young Lords, Jonathan Wilson and CB Brand and then hope to make it over to Bird’s Barber Shop on Thursday for their show with the Hymns. Come have a beer with us!
Our Uber friend Amanda picked up some cowboy boots this weekend and was kind enough to think of us and send over some pics! And with the purple and orange coloring, what fun and unique boots these are. If you have any cowboy boots or western wear- snap a photo and send over your best country fashion to whenyouawakela @ gmail.com and we will feature you in our style section. And please take a moment to say hello to Amanda!
