Oh Lonesome Me: A When You Awake Mixtape
Filed under: Mixtapes,Original Mixtape Series | Posted by:

This week’s mixtape is for all the lonesome folks out there. No one does sad, forlorn songs quite like country singers, and on this tape, we hear from none other than Hank Williams, George Jones, Gram Parsons and his International Submarine Band and more. And where did we get the inspiration for this mixtape (you might ask)? The song “Oh Lonesome Me!” There are actually two versions of the song that appear on here. The first one is the rather upbeat original by Don Gibson. The second is an extremely depressing, slow yet beautiful version by Neil Young. I have to admit that while I have known both of these songs for years, it wasn’t until someone pointed it out to me just a week ago that I realized that they are the SAME song! Even though they have the same lyrics and title, Neil Young’s version sounds so radically different that I just never connected it. Crazy. Take note Feist, a song that you don’t even realize is a cover…now that’s a good cover!
