Country Reggae: A When You Awake Mixtape

This week’s When You Awake Mixtape is all about Country Reggae. Country music was (and still is) insanely popular in Jamaica (who knew?!). Radio frequencies from the Southern US made their way down to Jamaica and country tunes were always topping their charts. A number of reggae artists took to giving an island spin to the classics and I have gathered some of my favorite reggae-fied country tunes from the 1960s and 70s here. This is the perfect way to herald in the summer and sunshine that should be coming our way soon (why is it raining and overcast in Los Angeles right now?)

Country Reggae: A When You Awake Mixtape

1. Toots and the Maytals- Take Me Home Country Roads (John Denver)
2. Freddie McGregor- I Shall Be Released (Bob Dylan)
3. Ken Parker- Help Me Make It Through the Night (Sammi Smith)
4. Llyod Charmers- LovIng Her Was Easier (Willie Nelson)
5. Jimmy London- It’s Not Or Never (Elvis Presley)
6. Ernest Wilson- My Elusive Dreams (Tammy Wynette/David Houston)
7. Hubert Lee- Sweet Caroline (Neil Diamond)
8. Marlene webber- Stand By Your Man (Tammy Wynette)
9. Freddie McGregor- Children Listen to Wise Words (Cat Stevens)
10. Ken Parker- Kiss An Angel Good Morning (Charley Pride)

Did I miss any good ones? Let me know! I’m jonesing for a Country Reggae Mix Part Two.
