Silver and Gold: A When You Awake Mixtape

Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of the Black Keys return for a new album that delivers on the roots of this duo’s true-blues sound, all the while developing a new depth of composition and production. It’s the best of both worlds: Keys fans will dig the integrity of this album as a logical follow-up to 2002’s thickfreakness and 2004’s Rubber Factory, but also appreciate a depth and soul of sound not found on their tightly-structured previous efforts. Chuck Rogerson took some pictures of the Black Crowes for us at their April 19th show in Salamanca, New York. Well done CR!
My style find of the weekend was a line of jewelry that they were selling over at Pretty Penny. The line is called Feather Witch and it’s made by a couple out of Oakland. They use mostly vintage beads and get their feathers from a man who uses them for Native American ceremonials outfits. They claim that they were “crafted with love by a couple that spends too much time doing their hair and listening to Fleetwood Mac.” Sounds good to me!
Thanks to Benny Kelly for throwing an awesome Craft Party yesterday! I was honored to have been invited and had an amazing time djing. We are talking about maybe taking this Crafting Party on the road so keep your eyes and ears open for events in LA and NYC! Thank you also to Pretty Penny for hosting the event. They have so much amazing western inspired wear (cowboy boots, jewelry, dresses, etc). If I lived here, that store would definitely be my financial downfall. Bay Area kids, seriously check it out.
Brooklyn band The Morning Pages are currently in the studio recording the full length follow up to their 2007 EP, the Company You Keep (which was one of When You Awake’s Top Picks For 2007). The record is being produced byRussell Simins of the John Spencer Blues Explosion and features guest vocals by our favorite sister duo, the Pierces. We had the chance to chat with lead singer Grant Maxwell about Russell, the Pierces and more! Check it out after the jump.
Vetiver played an extremely beautiful set last night at the Troubadour. This was the first time that I had seen them live and I was not disappointed. Paired with Jonathan Wilson, this was the perfect show. How I wish that I could be in Santa Cruz (my alma mater) tomorrow night and see them perform at the Crepe Place. Hmmm….maybe I could still make that happen? Check out the photos of Vetiver below, by the wonderful India Brookover.
Andy Cabic of the San Francisco based group Vetiver has given us his Top Ten Songs To Listen To While Coming Up With Lists of Ten Songs To Listen To Mixtape! With a number of rare folk and country based singer songwriter tunes interspersed with the likes of John Cale, The Beau Brummels and Ms. Skeeter Davis, this is a supremely unique and must have mixtape for those who love unknown gems. Vetiver is actually in the middle of a tour that will take them to the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco tonight and the Troubadour in Los Angeles tomorrow before heading overseas to conquer Europe! Perhaps they will run into last week’s Mixtape Makers and fellow Northern Californians Howlin’ Rain who are currently touring there as well! Vetiver will be joined on the California leg by one of our LA favorites Jonathan Wilson and Brooklyn’s Akron/Family for part of the European tour. We will be at the LA show, will you?
