Fine Tuning: The Black Keys’ “Attack and Release”
Filed under: Fine Tuning | Posted by:

Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney of the Black Keys return for a new album that delivers on the roots of this duo’s true-blues sound, all the while developing a new depth of composition and production. It’s the best of both worlds: Keys fans will dig the integrity of this album as a logical follow-up to 2002’s thickfreakness and 2004’s Rubber Factory, but also appreciate a depth and soul of sound not found on their tightly-structured previous efforts. (continued after the jump)

Style Find: Feather Witch
Filed under: Uncategorized | Posted by:

My style find of the weekend was a line of jewelry that they were selling over at Pretty Penny. The line is called Feather Witch and it’s made by a couple out of Oakland. They use mostly vintage beads and get their feathers from a man who uses them for Native American ceremonials outfits. They claim that they were “crafted with love by a couple that spends too much time doing their hair and listening to Fleetwood Mac.” Sounds good to me!

Feather Witch also has an online store over at Etsy. You can check it out by clicking here. If anyone is looking for a present for me anytime soon, the earrings below will suffice…wink wink.

In Living Color: Craft Party at Pretty Penny
Filed under: In Living Color | Posted by:

Thanks to Benny Kelly for throwing an awesome Craft Party yesterday! I was honored to have been invited and had an amazing time djing. We are talking about maybe taking this Crafting Party on the road so keep your eyes and ears open for events in LA and NYC! Thank you also to Pretty Penny for hosting the event. They have so much amazing western inspired wear (cowboy boots, jewelry, dresses, etc). If I lived here, that store would definitely be my financial downfall. Bay Area kids, seriously check it out.

Country Reggae: A When You Awake Mixtape
Filed under: Mixtapes,Original Mixtape Series | Posted by:

This week’s When You Awake Mixtape is all about Country Reggae. Country music was (and still is) insanely popular in Jamaica (who knew?!). Radio frequencies from the Southern US made their way down to Jamaica and country tunes were always topping their charts. A number of reggae artists took to giving an island spin to the classics and I have gathered some of my favorite reggae-fied country tunes from the 1960s and 70s here. This is the perfect way to herald in the summer and sunshine that should be coming our way soon (why is it raining and overcast in Los Angeles right now?)

In Living Color: Vetiver at the Troubadour
Filed under: In Living Color | Posted by:

Vetiver played an extremely beautiful set last night at the Troubadour. This was the first time that I had seen them live and I was not disappointed. Paired with Jonathan Wilson, this was the perfect show. How I wish that I could be in Santa Cruz (my alma mater) tomorrow night and see them perform at the Crepe Place. Hmmm….maybe I could still make that happen? Check out the photos of Vetiver below, by the wonderful India Brookover.

Mixin’ with Vetiver
Filed under: Mixin' With Series,Mixtapes | Posted by:

Andy Cabic of the San Francisco based group Vetiver has given us his Top Ten Songs To Listen To While Coming Up With Lists of Ten Songs To Listen To Mixtape! With a number of rare folk and country based singer songwriter tunes interspersed with the likes of John Cale, The Beau Brummels and Ms. Skeeter Davis, this is a supremely unique and must have mixtape for those who love unknown gems. Vetiver is actually in the middle of a tour that will take them to the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco tonight and the Troubadour in Los Angeles tomorrow before heading overseas to conquer Europe! Perhaps they will run into last week’s Mixtape Makers and fellow Northern Californians Howlin’ Rain who are currently touring there as well! Vetiver will be joined on the California leg by one of our LA favorites Jonathan Wilson and Brooklyn’s Akron/Family for part of the European tour. We will be at the LA show, will you?
