Slow Runner has given us not one, but two very special lists. First up, we have their “Top Five Reasons to Hammer Ice Picks Into Your Eardrums and Forgo the Privilege of Hearing.” All I can say is… poor Reba McIntyre. BUT WAIT! Before you brutally ruin one of your senses forever, the Charleston, South Carolina band has also provided us with an anecdote: The “Top Five Reasons To Stop Yourself At The Last Minute From Jamming Ice Picks Into Your Eardrums.” Thank you Slow Runner! I wasn’t looking forward to the whole “ice pick” and “pain” thing. Their latest record, Mermaids, was released in April of this year. Cool thing is if you buy the record, you also get a free subscription to Paste Magazine. $12 for a CD and a one year subscription? Not bad at all!
Dr Dog- 100 Years
This was the soundtrack to my dream last night. Now if I only I could remember what actually happened in it…
I am flying back from Nashville today and heading straight over to the Little Joy to DJ a Country set. Come join me for a drink and make fun of my Southern drawl that has inevitably creeped back out after years of California forcing it into submission! 10:30 pm ish on.
David Frizzell and Shelly West – You’re The Reason God Made Oklahoma
This song always cracks me up. It’s so bad. It really is. But at the same time, I can’t stop myself from putting it on at least a couple of times a month. With lines like “I work 10 hours on a John Deere tractor, just thinking of you all day” and “Santa Monica Freeway sometimes makes a country girl blue”… it just doesn’t get much better than that.
Black Mountain will be performing at the Bowery Ballroom tonight. Tickets are still available at $16 a pop. They will be heading to the Music Hall of Williamsburg tomorrow across the bridge in Brooklyn before heading back up to their native Canada to finish out their tour. Seattle- based Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter are opening.

Joan Baez (Newport Folk Festival)
Joan Baez pokes fun at Bob Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival.
We wandered over to downtown Bristol around noon and from that moment on we were literally planted in front of bands for about ten hours straight (and we still didn’t get to see about half of the bands that we wanted to see). This festival really did pull in the cream of the bluegrass/classic country-esque crop and I just want to say thanks to Eric and all of the organizers for putting on a great event.

Doc Watson- Summertime
Doc Watson’s performance of “Summertime” from Bristol. His grandson is accompanying him. At the beginning, he says “[it's a song] that Merle and I used to play a whole lot…and Joey Richards would pick the beat on this too.”
