Can yodeling save the world? Apparently at least the yodeling in this song can. In Tim Burton’s film Mars Attacks (spoiler ahead), young Lukas Haas saves the world from an alien invasion when he discovers that this song makes the alien’s heads explode and instantly kills ’em. See! Yodeling can be a good thing. This tune also appears on Le Switch’s Drink, Laugh and Sob mixtape. Be sure to check it out if you havent yet.

Ticket Giveaway: Hackensaw Boys at the Redwood Bar
Filed under: Giveaways | Posted by:

We have a pair of tickets up for grabs to see the Charlottesville, Virginia based Hackensaw Boys at the Redwood Bar and Grill Wednesday, October 29th (tomorrow). We saw these boys in Bristol at the Rhythm and Roots Festival and were so impressed with them that we went to see them perform not once but twice (and would have gone back a third time if they’d had another gig). The show is 21 and over with Eleni Mandell and The Horse Thieves supporting. To win, e-mail whenyouawakela @ (subject: Hackensaw) and include your first and last name in the email. One winner will be picked randomly and contacted. If you miss them Wednesday, the Hackensaw Boys will also be headlining the Silverlake Lounge on Thursday. Now seriously folks, go see them. I guarantee that it will be one of the most enjoyable experiences of your recent concerts going lives- but you have to be willing to boogie the night away.

YouTube Preview ImageThe Shins- Saint Simon

I stumbled across this video yesterday and had forgotten how much I love this band. When they first came out,  I was all over Oh, Inverted World (actually met my bff at a Shin’s concert in 2002- thank you Shins!) and Chutes Too Narrow and then completely missed the release of Wincing The Night Away. Anyone listen to that last record? Hmmm… I just realized that I did that with Iron and Wine and Shepherd’s Dog too. Where was I in 2007 when both of these records came out? I must make up for the error of my ways asap!

In Living Color: Felice Brothers
Filed under: In Living Color | Posted by:

India and I headed over to the Troubadour last week to check out the Felice Brothers show. Deer Tick was set to open but had to cancel last minute due to car troubles, I believe? I was super bummed to miss Deer Tick, but the Felice Brothers just about made up for it with their catchy sing-a-long type songs, rowdy stage presence (dancing, stomping, jumping on top of the drum kit) and an audience that knew every lyric and raised their hands to the band as if feeling the holy musical spirit. Check out more pictures from the show after the jump.

In Our Queue: “Of All The Things” at the AFI Film Fest
Filed under: Uncategorized | Posted by:

The AFI Film Festival is coming up next week in Los Angeles and they are showing “Of All The Things”, a film about legendary songwriter/producer Dennis Lambert.  The name may not ring a bell, but Lambert is the man behind peace promoting oldies like “Old Tin Soldier”, “Country Boy” and our favorite, “Rhinestone Cowboy.”

Kris Kristofferson Goes Twang
Filed under: Twang Series | Posted by:

Kris Kristofferson is the king of sad and depressing, yet incredibly sexy songs. Don’t believe me? Just take a look at this video of him and Rita Coolidge singing “Help Me Make It Through the Night” below. I dare say that it’s one of of the most electric performances ever caught on camera. You could cut their sexual tension with a knife. Check out some other electrifying performances of his tunes by the likes of Ike and Tina Turner, Willie Nelson and Janis Joplin after the jump.
