Merle Haggard Goes Twang
Filed under: Mixtapes,Twang Series | Posted by:

This edition of our Twang Series focuses on the great Merle Haggard: a musician and songwriter who actually lived through many of the hard times and heartaches that serve as the subjects to his most famous songs. In other words, Hag has street cred. He spent his formative years in and out of jail and eventually landed a 3-year stint in San Quentin Prison (where he saw Johnny Cash perform) before leaving his criminal life behind and deciding to get into the music business. Since then, he has become one of the most acclaimed songwriters in music history and even helped create an entirely new subgenre of country music (the “Bakersfield Sound”). Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, the Flying Burrito Brothers and others help us pay homage to him on our Merle Haggard Goes Twang mixtape. Check it out after the jump.

I’m damn sure Steve Young could have made a career out of playing only Merle Haggard songs. His renditions are rare examples of covers being as good or better than the originals.
