Jim McGuire’s Nashville Portraits is an unparalleled collection of in-studio photographs taken over the course of 30 years. New Jersey born Jim Mcguire picked up photography during a year long army stint in Vietman. When he returned to the states in 1965, he moved to New York and continued to develop as a photographer before moving to Nashville in the early 70s to apply his craft to his one true love, country music.
On his website, McGuire states: “From a young age, I was drawn to hillbilly music, to the sounds, the emotion, the honesty, and then of course to the people who made it. I can’t remember what I had for lunch yesterday, but I can still remember what the room smelled like when I walked in and heard Hank Snow’s voice coming from those ratty speakers at a Boy Scout camp in New Jersey, 1953. Discovering country music changed my life in ways I couldn’t have imagined.”
Check out additional portraits of Waylon Jennings, Ralph Stanley, Townes Van Zandt and others after the jump. For the full collection, head on over the McGuire’s website.

Unbelievable. I’ve enjoyed many of these photos on lp and CD covers over the years and never placed them all in the work of the same man. Jim mAguire sure knows his light.
