RIP Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Billy Powell
Filed under: News | Posted by:

Lynyrd Skynryd keyboardist Billy Powell passed away on Wednesday morning in Jacksonville at the age of 56 due to heart complications.  Powell began playing in Skynyrd in 1972 after year’s of roadie duties for the band.  When a plane crash killed lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and backup vocalist Cassie Gaines in 1977, the band took a break until the remaining members reunited for a tour  in 1987. From that point on, Powell continued to play in various incarnations of the band until his own death. Skynyrd guitarist Garry Rossington is now the only remaining member from the band’s classic lineup. I can’t think of a more fitting tribute to Powell than Skynyrd’s own song, “Free Bird.” RIP Billy!
