Great Lake Swimmers- Your Rocky Spine
We stopped by the Chad Vangaalen/Women/The Boat People show at Spaceland on Saturday night. It was a solid evening of music from an international assortment of bands: Vangaalen and Women hail from Canada, while The Boat People made their way over to LA from Australia. Check out more photos after the jump.
Dan Auerbach- Trouble Weighs A Ton
Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys with his Uncle James Quine performs “Trouble Weighs A Ton” from his debut solo record, Keep It Hid (out now on Nonesuch Records).
Strand of Oaks (aka Timothy Showalter) has just announced a tour that will take him around the Eastern and Midwestern portions of the US. He’s touring in support of his full-length release, Leave Ruin, which came out January 27 via La Société Expéditionnaire. Showalter also shared his “Top 10 Songs to Stare at His Velvet Pegasus Painting” with us back in February, which was a magical little collection of tunes by Chet Atkins, John Renbourn, Wendy (Walter) Carlos and more. If you missed the mixtape, you can click here to check it out. The complete tour dates and a video of him performing “Two Kids” are after the jump.
Tune into Little Radio today from 2-4 pm (PST) for a special South by Southwest edition of the “When You Awake Show” where I’ll be playing some of the best new acts that were featured at this year’s music conference in Austin, Texas. Tune in to hear music by the Felice Brothers, Blue Giant, Megafaun, Dark Meat, Dan Auerbach and more.
Neil Young and Waylon Jennings- Are You Ready For The Country
Thanks to Wes for sending over this clip of Neil Young and Waylon Jennings singing Young’s “Are You Ready For The Country” live on the TV Show Nashville Now on September 20, 1984.
We are giving away three (3) pairs of tickets to see Jason Isbell (ex- Drive-by Truckers) and Justin Townes Earle on Tuesday, April 2nd at Spaceland. The show is 21 plus with Frank Fairfield supporting. I saw Earle back in October and can tell you that he is seriously worth the price of the show (Tix are $15- but you can win them here for free!). To win, e-mail whenyouawakela @ gmail.com (subject: Jason and Justin) and tell us your favorite joke (hey–it’s Friday and I need some entertainment). Include your first and last name in the email. Three winners will be picked and contacted.

Deer Tick, who played one of my favorite shows at SXSW, just announced a tour that will take them across the Eastern and Midwestern portions of the US with the likes of Jenny Lewis, Phosphorescent and Elvis Perkins in Dearland. They also just announced that their latest record (and 2nd full-length album), Born On Flag Day, will be released June 23 via Partisan Records. Tracklisting and Tour Dates after the jump.

Fool’s Gold- Surprise Hotel
I missed Los Angeles- based band Fool’s Gold at SXSW, but luckily I’ll have to chance to catch them four times next month (for free!) during their Monday night residency at the Echo.
