Guest Mixtape: Cosmic French Music
Filed under: Mixtapes,Original Mixtape Series | Posted by: jody

Thanu from the French website There’s Always Someone Cooler Than You have put together a mixtape for us of the best cosmic country and folk music from France. French surf music? Eagles influenced bands from Normandie? A French Neil Young? Mais oui!! This is the first of what we plan will be a series of mixtapes from different bloggers around the world introducing us to the great folk and roots (can we still call it “americana”?) groups in their countries. What locale should we feature next?
1. Thousand & Bramier – Great Wall of Fire
The new album of this psychedelic-folk duo begins with that song. Indeed it’s a great opening song.
2. Flowers From The Man Who Shot Your Cousin – Lay Down Your Arms
Morgan Caris’s songs always leave me speechless.
3. St Augustine – Polar Bears
Beautiful song. 1st album coming soon!
4. The Limes – Morning Noon & Night
Amazing transatlantic supergroup featuring members of french bands Toy Fight, Orouni and Mina Tindle along with Brent Ballantyne (Henry Sparrow) and John Hale, two singer-songwriters from Durham, North Carolina… you can’t go wrong with so many talents in one band!
5. Da Brasilians – Million Miles
Probably the only french band that claims the influence of the Eagles! Best California rock ever made on the coast of Normandy.
6. David Fakehahm – Untitled #1
French alt-country (whatever that is) at its best.
7. H-Burns – Footsteps
Taken from his first album called Songs From The Electric Sky which, in fact, is anything but electric.
8. Sammy Decoster – Savannah Bay
Country-blues sung in french without sounding ridiculous.
9. Jean-Louis Murat – Les Voyageurs Perdus
Jim Harrison, about whom he once wrote a song, calls him the french Neil Young.
10. The Cavaliers – Menace sur la Côte
Surf music from France? Yes, we also do that…

The music of Brazil is such a rich resource, and the time I spent there only made that more evident, you can’t go wrong.
