Sunday night at McCabe’s was an amazing evening of real, honest to god music. Armed with only a single acoustic guitar, Justin Townes Earle completely owned the stage at the legendary music shop where Tom Waits, Doc Watson, Joni Mitchell, Odetta, JJ Cale, Gene Clark and countless others have performed, with his witty tales of love, sin, train rides and loose woman. Many musicians could also learn a thing or two from Earle regarding between song banter. He literally had the audience hanging on every word and sideways glance. Perhaps my favorite quote of the evening occurred right before he covered a Carter Family tune. Before the first note, he paused and look earnestly at the audience and stated: “Now y’all remember this. AP Carter didn’t steal anything. And if he did (shrug), he’s AP fucking Carter.” Well said, Justin. Also- great supporting sets from Los Angeles’ own Charlie Wadhams and Frank Fairfield. Thanks to Lincoln and McCabe’s for setting up such an amazing show and inviting us to co-present it and thank to Robert Kittleman of Truer Sources of Sound for the pics and video. Check out more pics from the evening are after the jump.

My favorite quote pre-song was “this song is about a girl from Georgia who my mom would not be happy about the things she taught me.”
