Bethany Cosentino from the Los Angeles-based band Best Coast has given us her “Top 10 Songs To Include On A ‘Crush’ Mix”, which features tunes from the Ronettes, The Beach Boys, Doris Troy and more. This is the perfect sugary sweet mix put together by a girl who hopes her music will inspire everyone “to make out to it on a beach blanket.” You can catch Best Coast this coming Monday, September 28th at the Echo in Los Angeles for the final night of Leslie and the Badgers month-long September residency. Best Coast will be performing alongside the Badgers, Paperplanes and the Sian Alice Group. They are also recording a new 7″ this weekend which will be out in November via Black Iris Records. Check out the mixtape and all of Best Coast’s upcoming tour dates after the jump.
1. The Beach Boys- You’re So Good To Me
This is one of my favorite Beach Boys songs of all time. Basically if you want to tell someone how much you appreciate them—this is the song for that. My favorite lyric is “you take my hand, and you understand when I get in a bad mood.”
2. Doris Troy- Just One Look
So many people have covered this song, but this is the original version—and personally, it’s my favorite one. I just think that everything about this song is so perfect, and when you really like someone, and you listen to this, it really makes you feel super happy!
3. The Angels- Adore Him
This is quite possibly my favorite song ever. The first time I heard it, I really just fell in love with the melody, and the handclaps, and the whole sound of the song—but then once I had listened to it like a million times, I started paying attention to the lyrics, and realized that the song is just about being in love with someone who pretty much always screws you over—pretty relatable, right?
4. The Byrds- All I Really Want To Do
I really like this cover better than the Dylan version. This song always makes me really happy, and I feel like it’s a perfect song to play for a crush, because obviously you have to be friends first before anything else can happen! I feel like it just sends a cute little message showing that you care.
5. The Temptations- My Girl
Basically, any guy who would put this on a mix for me, would probably win my heart. I seriously just think this is like the sweetest song in the world, and though the lyrics are so simple, they really make me happy. Not to mention this is like the best guitar riff in the history of music!
6. Lesley Gore- Summer and Sandy
Ok, so Lesley Gore is basically one of my biggest inspirations when it comes to Best Coast—and this song is one of her best. I just think this is a really happy, upbeat song—that’s really just about having fun with someone that you care about.
7. Patsy Cline- She’s Got You
I kind of feel like every “crush” mix has to have at least one downer on it, and for me, this is the perfect one to include. I think we all know what it’s like to want to be with someone who you can’t be with because there is someone else in the picture It’s sad, but it’s beautiful.
8. The Ronettes- Be My Baby
No “crush” mix is complete without this song. It’s like the most classic “I want to be with you” song, and it’s also just one of the greatest songs in the world.
9. The Cookies- I Never Dreamed
Again, just a really beautiful song, with an amazing guitar part and vocals, but the lyrics are so sweet and will let any special someone know just how special they are.
10. Patience and Prudence- Tonight You Belong To Me
Everything about this song is amazing, and I don’t know how a person could hear this and not just feel like a crazy amount of “awwwww” emotions!
