Tag! We’re it. A while back, our friend Rachel at the fashion blog A Material World challenged us to a blog chain letter called the “Seven Songs Shaping Your Life”. The instructions were simple: List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your life. Post these instructions in your blog along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they’re listening to.
So, Jenna (occasional WYA contributor) and I have accepted the challenge and without further ado, we present to you our “Seven Songs Shaping Our Fall”. Check out the tunes, as well as our seven victims after the jump. What are the Top 7 Songs Shaping YOUR Fall? Let us know in the comments.
Seven Songs Shaping Our Fall: 2009
1. AA Bondy- I Can See The Pines Are Dancing
I have been listening to this song non-stop over the last couple of weeks. I like it so much I even whipped out Garage Band (which has been opened maybe 3 times) and recorded my own version of it (don’t worry, I won’t subject you guys to that).
2. The Smart Brothers- Crazy
Caught these guys down at the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion in Tennessee and I’ve been singing their praises and wearing out their CD ever since. Barbershop quarter meets Appalachian surf rock. Can’t go wrong with that.
3. Deer Tick- Little White Lies
I know I talk a lot about Deer Tick. I can’t help it. It’s chemical.
4. The Morning Pages- Smokey Mountain Hideaway
The autumn to me always means Tennessee: the changing leaves, the chilly air, the fog covering the mountains. I actually spend every Thanksgiving in a little cabin in the Smokey Mountains and man, I can’t wait to get back to my Smokey Mountain Hideaway.
5. Koobas- Woe, Is Love My Dear
The Koobas cover Bert Jansch. Give me a rainy day, a blanket, some hot tea and I’m set.
6. The Limes- Beyond Blue
First found out about this band on Thanu’s Cosmic French Mixtape that he did for us a while back and I liked their tune so much that I searched out more music and then bam! Found this song that gives me good, happy, layered harmony-filled shivers.
7. The Kinks- Days
The Kinks are as comforting to me as my grandpa’s ol’ sweater. And “Days” is just a beautiful song.
Jenna’s Picks
8. O’Death- Angeline
With its beautiful strings and solemn lyrics about death and disappearing, “Angeline” sounds quite lively for it’s subject matter. O’Death is a perfect band to listen to between the transitions of summer to fall, and fall to winter
9. State Radio- Keepsake
This was my rainy day song for the whole two days it rained in L.A. The sweet harmonies and acoustic play beautifully against raindrops tapping on the window.
10. Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s- As Tall As Cliffs
I may have mentioned this song for the last song list I contributed. Well, I just can’t get sick of it, outstanding build up and lifts my mood no matter how grumpy I am. Very useful for those nostalgic fall moods.
11. Avett Brothers- I and Love and You
First track I heard from their latest album, I have yet to get to the rest of the album because I keep replaying this one over and over again.
12. Sea Wolf- Wicked Blood
Its hard to narrow down my playlist to seven songs. That being said, I was torn between this track and “Bye Bye Bye” by Plants and Animals. Both great in percussion and piano, I simply chose the more recent release. The song “Wicked Blood” is great though. Reminds me why I liked Sea Wolf to begin with.
13. Blind Pilot- 3 Rounds and a Sound
This makes me think of all those fellow music nerds who like the romantic notion of finding their soul mate through the common love of a particular song.
14. Robert Francis- Nightfall
Even though I’ve seen Robert Francis quite a few times over the year, I have just now acquired one of his albums. Each time I see him, he only gets better, and his song “Nightfall” is my current favorite.

Comment by Mark 10.25.09 @ 3:48 pmNeko Case, eh? She’s one of those artists that I’ve always heard about and am sure I’d like if I listened to her—-but just never quite gotten around to it. What’s the best “intro to neko case” cd?
Comment by jody 10.26.09 @ 7:56 pmJody, I would go with Blacklisted as the best “intro to Neko Case”. The guys from the Sadies are backing her. Fantastic voice on that gal!
Comment by Stian 10.27.09 @ 4:31 pmaa bondy - i can see the pines are dancing (consensus eh?)
vulture whale - land it
the dexateens - down low
delta spirit - ode to sunshine
hank williams - i can’t get you off of my mind
waylon jennings - freedom to stay
jim croce - cigarettes, whiskey, & wild, wild women
Good choices! Vulture Whale, eh? Never heard of ‘em! Going to check it out now.
Comment by jody 10.28.09 @ 1:48 pmJason Collett - We All Lose One Another
Port O’Brien - Five and Dime
Okkervil River - Westfall
Earlimart - Bloody Nose
Bright Eyes - Land Locked Blues
Deer Tick - Smith Hill
The Good Life - After O’Rourke’s, 2:10 A.M.
(And yes, that darned Pines is consensus; you can ask Jenna, I had that one pegged before you posted!)
Comment by Mike 10.28.09 @ 8:01 pmWell, hah, I’ve only listened to Fox Confessor Brings The Flood. Same kind of thing - I love that record, so I’m sure I’d like her others, but have just not gotten around to them yet!
That said, my (highly biased) pick for best intro to Neko Case is Fox Confessor. There’s really a stellar cast for the record too: The Sadies (her regular collaborators it seems, and a fantastic band in their own right), Garth Hudson, some of the guys from Calexico, and Howe Gelb (formerly from Giant Sand).
I’ll have to seek out Blacklisted now…
Two of the blogs I tagged have posted their seven songs! Check it out:

Well what do you know… I Can See The Pines Are Dancing is one of mine too! That whole record has been on repeat for me really. The title track is another favorite of mine.
Comment by David 10.24.09 @ 12:40 amOther than that, I find I am listening to a lot of The Band, Van Morrison, James Blackshaw, and Bobby Charles this fall. I also find I keep on playing Neko Case’s Fox Confessor LP as well (an old homey favorite).
