I went to the Roxy last week to check out Noah and the Whale and Robert Francis. I caught Noah and the Whale last year when they came through town and it was one of the more enjoyable concerts I’d seen with their catchy as hell layered pop tunes. This time around, they were touring on a new record and it appeared that lead vocalist and songwriter Charlie Fink had gone through some hard times because while the songs were incredibly beautiful and well crafted, they were also rather solemn and focused on themes of loneliness and heartbreak. I was hoping for a rousing version of their hit “5 Years Time” from the previous record to lighten things up during the encore but the tune never came.
So, while I did quite like Noah and the Whale overall, it was opener Robert Francis that really stood out that night. I’ve been following Robert for a couple of years now and he’s constantly growing as an artist and performer. He’s talented and emotive and with a new record out on Atlantic, I’m certain that you’ll be hearing much more about this young artist in the months to come. Check out more pics from the show, taken by India Brookover, after the jump. (more…)
I saw Dr Ralph Stanley perform last night at Royce Hall in Los Angeles. It was an honor to watch this living legend, who at one point during the set sent his band off stage and sang the tune “O’Death” completely a cappella. For a taste of what that was like, check out this clip of Stanley singing the tune in Virginia in May of 2008. Stanley’s additional tour dates are after the jump. (more…)
Tag! We’re it. A while back, our friend Rachel at the fashion blog A Material World challenged us to a blog chain letter called the “Seven Songs Shaping Your Life”. The instructions were simple: List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your life. Post these instructions in your blog along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they’re listening to.
So, Jenna (occasional WYA contributor) and I have accepted the challenge and without further ado, we present to you our “Seven Songs Shaping Our Fall”. Check out the tunes, as well as our seven victims after the jump. What are the Top 7 Songs Shaping YOUR Fall? Let us know in the comments. (more…)
Pics from last week’s Gold Dust at Footsies. Thanks to everyone who came out and helped celebrate my 25th birthday! Next Gold Dust: Thursday, November 5th. We’ll be spinning Southern Rock, Country Rock and Classic Rock at our bi-weekly (1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month) all girl-DJ night. See you then!
When You Awake Presents Murfreesboro, Tennessee band Those Darlins tonight at the Silverlake Lounge. Local favorites Leslie and the Badgers and Australian band The Grates are supporting. The Badgers kick things off at 9 pm with tickets at $12 a pop. I saw Those Darlins at the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Reunion in East Tennessee last month and I highly recommend checking them out if you are a fan of good ol’ booze- fueled rock and roll.
A mystery someone recorded our George Harrison Tribute Concert last month and just posted it up on one of the torrent sites. I downloaded the surprisingly good quality recordings, cleaned them up a bit, and included them for your listening pleasure after the jump. (more…)
