Inter-continental band The Limes have given us their “Top 10 Songs For When Tall Buildings Replace Tall Trees.” The mix features tunes by Caetano Veloso, REM, David Bowie and more. The band, which has members located in Paris, France and Durham, North Carolina, just released their debut self-titled album on September 29th via the Parisian label Sauvage Records. Their tune “Beyond Blue” was also chosen to appear on When You Awake’s very own Seven Songs Shaping Our Fall Mixtape. Check out their mix and “Beyond Blue” after the jump.

The Limes

Top 10 Songs For When Tall Buildings Replace Tall Trees:

1. Burt Bacharach- Something Big
Great, relatively obscure gem by Bacharach/David. One of most optimistic set of lyrics, ever. Listening to this song, you get the feeling that anything is possible, but it never lets you forget what it’s taken to get you to that place.

2. David Bowie- A New Career In A New Town
The title really says it all, doesn’t it?

3. Caetano Veloso- Os Argonautas

4. Barbara- Les Voyages
Two beautiful songs, talking about what is going on in between cities

5. The Go-Betweens- Help or Something
Before they became one of the best art rock bands of the 80′s The Go-Betweens recorded some gritty and urgently catchy pop influenced as much by The Monkees as by The Velvet Underground.

6. The Clean- Anything Could Happen
The combination of chiming guitars and driving rhythm epitomized early Clean and many other 80′s New Zealand pop bands. David Kilgour is singing about drugs/guns and not having fun in a big city, with a chorus that is so positive and hopeful over a melody that goes nowhere and it’s in such an impetuous, youthful way that is endlessly charming to me.

7.R.E.M. – Find The River
How many big cities are crossed by rivers? London, São Paulo, Tokyo… To find the city, you have to find the river.

8.The Go! Team – Keys To The City
When trees are replaced by buildings, you need to understand why. You can be a “hardcore jumper”, like the singer in this song, and explore the buildings from the outside. Or you might also just ask for the keys.

9. Nina Simone- Baltimore

10. Dorival Caymmi- Saudade de Bahia
Two different pictures of two very different cities to end up this list.
