Los Angeles, California- based musician Ted Russell Kamp has given us his “Top 10 Songs For The Long Drive Home.” The mix includes tunes by Bob Dylan, Guy Clark, Tom Waits and more. Kamp, who plays bass for Shooter Jennings, is currently touring in support of his own solo record, Poor Man’s Paradise. He’s stopping by the Cinema Bar in Culver City tonight before heading off to Europe for a month. You can check out his mixtape and the complete tour dates after the jump.
Top 10 Songs For The Long Drive Home:
1. Nick Drake – Three hours
Nick Drake has an incredible way of sustaining a mood. a sad english country side cross between depression and sacred beauty.
2. Leon Russell – Manhattan Island Serenade
This is a rare and pensive ballad from a true American music icon. Known more for his musicianship and arranging and blending of styles, this is a real showcase of his songwriting.
3. Tom Waits – San Diego Serenade
I could have had any of 10 or 20 incredible ballads from Tom Waits on this list, but this one has a real young romanticism in it that I love. This is from one of Tom Waits’ earliest records when he was really pure and young before a lot of the sonic experimentation.
4. John Prine – Speed of the Sound Of Loneliness
John Prine is so great at being the charming storyteller with his way of poking fun at us as people, but he really cuts to the chase with this song. I love this one for it’s honesty as it talks about loving someone who doesn’t know how to give love.
5. Bob Dylan – Ring Them Bells
From the record, Oh Mercy, this feels more sacred to me than many of the songs from Dylan’s Christian phase. Simple and driven by lyrics inspired by the Bible and deep gospel piano.
6. Mike Scott – What Do You Want Me To Do?
This is a spiritual and personal song by one of the great songwriters of our time. I never quite know if he is talking to God, a lover or an old friend.
7. Guy Clark – Instant Coffee Blues
I love how this song weaves around back into itself musically as it tells the story of waking up on the morning after a one night stand.
8. Beatles – She’s Leaving Home
Paul McCartney
9. Gary Louris and Marc Olson – Bicycle
This whole album is great. The two founding members of the Jayhawks reunited to make a great record last year. I opened a week of shows for them in Europe and was mesmerized every night by their harmonies and poetic lyrics.
10. Natalie Merchant – I May Know The Word
This is an incredible slow burn about struggling with the fear to go out and create a better life.
