Band Tee

Our good friends over at Benny Kelly have graciously agreed to head up a new section here on When You Awake that features music inspired craft tutorials. For the first installment, we learn how to make a bag out of a band t-shirt:

Have you ever fallen in love with a band tee at a concert, only to find out they have just L and XL left? Have a favorite band tee lying around that just doesn’t fit any more, but you can’t bear to toss it? Now you can take that ill fitting but totally adorable band tee and make yourself a stylish new bag to use whenever, wherever! Tutorial continues after the jump.

Step 1: Gather Supplies
Not much is needed for the transformation…old tee, scissors, medium to large bowl (depending on the size of your tee), marker, straight pins (optional) and a sewing machine (or thread and needle if you are handy like that).

Step 2: Cut Off Sleeves
Lie the tee flat on a hard surface and smooth out. Cut the sleeve (including seam) off the body of the tee using the seam as a guiding line.

Step 3: Create Bag Shape
Next you need to make an opening for the top of the bag. Take the medium/large bowl and place it face down over the neck area of the tee. Use its shape as a guide, mark a semicircle around the top of the tee with a marker. Then cut out the semicircle going through both sides of the tee.

Step 4: The Seam
Now all you have left to do is sew up the bottom opening of the tee, creating your new awesome bag! First you need to flip you newly shaped tee inside out and pin the bottom opening closed. The pinning is optional but a good way to make things just that much easier…

Then using your sewing machine or a needle and thread sew a straight seam across the bottom opening. I used a reinforced straight stitch to make sure the seam is strong enough.

Step 4: The Finish
Lastly trim the excess fabric from the edge of the seam, flip right-side out and viola! Show us what fantastic bags you can make from your favorite band tees!!
