Breathe Owl Breathe

Breathe Owl Breathe, who hail from East Jordan, Michigan, are another band that will be performing at When You Awake’s Two Year Anniversary Party this Friday, February 26th at the Bootleg Theater. I discovered the trio last August when I stumbled upon their inspired set at the Pickathon Music Festival in Portland, Oregon. They had the entire audience doing the wave, patting their hands on their thighs to make it sound like rain and pretending to be sabortooth tigers. They were utterly charming and won over my hardened music industry heart within seconds. They are currently touring in support of their upcoming release, a new LP entitled Magic Central which will be out on April 6th. They also just announced a 20-date tour beginning in April with the North Carolina band (and When You Awake favorite) Megafaun.

Two little known facts about Breathe Owl Breathe: 1. They have a dog that has 3 names (Hogan, Karhu, and Dragon) depending on his personality at any given moment. 2. Andrea is fluent in German, Portuguese, (and English), Trevor has a masters degree in Geography, and Micah has run 4 marathons.

At Friday’s show, they will be playing alongside Eric D. Johnson (of the Fruit Bats), Leslie and the Badgers and Shakey Graves. Tix are $10 in advance, $13 at the door and you can buy them here.  You can check out the poster for the show and Breathe Owl Breathe’s additional tour dates after the jump. Music For The Morning After

I was really swamped around Valentine’s Day and though I tried my best to put together When You Awake’s annual Music For the Morning After mixtape, I just didn’t come up with anything good enough to post. So I thought I’d get away with not doing one this year,  but the uproar in my inbox has proven otherwise. So without further ado (hey, a week late is better than never, right?), I would like to present When You Awake’s Music For the Morning After: Volume Three. The theme is inspired by my favorite part of Valentine’s Day. It’s not the flowers, boxes of chocolates or candlelight dinners that gets me. It’s waking up in your lover’s arms the morning after and just feeling happy and content to be there with them (without any of the pressure of V-DAY looming overhead).  If you missed the previous mixes, be sure to check out Music For The Morning After Volumes One and Two.

Band Spotlight: Shakey Graves

Shakey

Over the week, I’ll be spotlighting the bands that I’ve chosen to play at When You Awake’s Two Year Anniversary Party this Friday, February 26th at the Bootleg Theater. First up, we have the Los Angeles by way of Texas based troubadour Shakey Graves (née Alejandro Rose-Garcia.) He’s a When You Awake veteran who’s performed at both our Neil Young and George Harrison tribute concerts where he serenaded the audiences with his hard hitting banjo stylings.

Two little known facts about Shakey Graves: 1. He attended the same high school in Austin, Texas as the Bush twins and Benjamin McKenzie. 2. For all of you Friday Night Light‘s fans out there (my new tv show obsession), he guest starred on the show as “The Swede” that tempted dear Julie’s heart in Season Two.
