Vinyl Picks: a weekly column were we recommend three vinyl records that any When You Awake reader should own. First up, we have the Rising Sons featuring Taj Mahal, Ry Cooder, Jesse Lee Kincaid and others. The group was in existence from 1964-1966 and counted Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger and David Crosby among its admirers. Their debut album, however, was never released and remained unissued in the Columbia vaults until Sundazed Records got a hold of some of the long lost tracks and put them together for this 1992 compilation (released on vinyl in 2001). You can buy it new on Amazon for $15.03. Click here to check it out.

Next up, we have the 45 rpm vinyl for Wilson Pickett’s 1969 cover of The Beatles’ “Hey Jude” (featuring Duane Allman). This tune was Allman’s big break into the music biz. His work on the record got him hired as a full time session musician at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and drew the attention of folks like Eric Clapton who said “I remember hearing Wilson Pickett’s ‘Hey Jude’ and just being astounded by the lead break at the end. … I had to know who that was immediately — right now.” Ebay has the Buy It Now option set up (no bidding required) for $2.99. Click here to check it out.

Lastly, we have ex-Monkee (and one of the under-appreciated pioneers of country rock) Michael Nesmith with his first solo record, 1970′s Magnetic South. The record also heavily features steel guitarist Red Rhodes, an in-demand session player who appeared on records by Bert Jansch, The Byrds, Harry Nilsson, John Phillips, Buffy Sainte-Marie and many others. They have the Buy It Now option set up (no bidding required) for $15.00. Click here to check it out.

Phosphorescent are set to release their latest record, Here’s To Taking It Easy, on May 11th via Dead Oceans. We previously posted the album opener “It’s Hard To Be Humble (When You’re From Alabama)” and have just been given another tune to share with you, “The Mermaid Parade.” If these two tunes aren’t enough to satisfy your need for new Phosphorescent until May 11, you’re in luck. Here’s To Taking It Easy is now available for pre-order and all pre-orders will receive an instant MP3 download of the album. Plus! Check out Phosphorescent’s upcoming Northeastern and European tour dates after the jump.

We are giving away three (3) pairs of tickets to see The Heartless Bastards and Hacienda this Friday, April 30th at the Echoplex. The show is 18 + with Amy Cook supporting. Hacienda were one of the top acts that I saw at this year’s SXSW and I highly recommend heading over to the Echoplex to check out their particular blend of Sir Douglas Quintet-inspired Texas-fried rock and roll (watch the live snippet of them performing the Beatles’ “Day Tripper” below for a taste). To win tix, e-mail whenyouawakela @ gmail.com (subject: Heartless Bastards) and tell us your favorite song about a heartless bastard (ex. a murderer, a cheater and/or a scoundrel). Include your first and last name in the email. Three winners will be picked and contacted.

Dr. Dog, Punch Brothers, Fruit Bats, Blind Boy Paxton, Little Wings, and Cardboard Songsters have just been added to the already impressive lineup at this year’s Pickathon Music Festival. The outdoor fest, which is set to take place August 6-8 at Pendarvis Farm in Portland, Oregon, is When You Awake’s music festival of choice (yes, I would choose it over VIP tickets to Coachella any day). I’m returning this year with a carload of friends in tow and I am 100% serious when I say that if you have the means to attend, don’t hesitate and buy a ticket now. This festival represents everything I love about music. As Scott from Dr Dog said at last year’s Pickathon, “I feel better about being a person since I’ve been here.” Discounted weekend tickets and more info can be found here and my review of last year’s Pickathon can be found here.
