Vinyl Picks: Helping Build Your Collection, Three Records At A Time
Filed under: Vinyl Picks | Posted by:

Vinyl Picks: a somewhat weekly column where we recommend three vinyl records that every When You Awake reader should own (or at least know about). This week, we are focusing on three great soundtracks. First up, we have Performance. The Performance soundtrack superbly integrates both background and incidental music by Jack Nitzsche, often featuring sitars or a wailing Merry Clayton, alongside great rock songs, like the rollicking blues-infused “Gone Dead Train” by Randy Newman. Ebay has the Buy It Now option set up (no bidding required) for $19.99. Click here to check it out.

Next up is 1969’s Zabriskie Point, a counter-culture epic directed by Michaelangelo Antonioni. The soundtrack features a few country-rockish turns by Pink Floyd, who had spent at least a month holed up in a deluxe hotel suite in Rome, working 12-hour days, composing music for the film. Most of it wasn’t used and has only appeared on bootleg recordings. “Unknown Song” (also known as “Rain In The Country”) is a shimmering blend of acoustic strumming, skittish electric picking, and Gilmour’s slide guitar. You can buy it new on Amazon for $18.03. Click here to check it out.

Lastly, we have the swampy blues-jazz soundtrack for Dennis Hopper’s 1990 film The Hot Spot. The movie itself, based on the 1953 pulp novel Hell Hath No Fury, leaves a lot to be desired, but Jack Nitzsche’s original score is highlighted by an evocative pairing of jazz trumpet legend Miles Davis and celebrated bluesman John Lee Hooker. Davis’ sparsely ethereal trumpet, alongside Hooker’s anguished field moaning and groovy blues guitar riffs, not to mention Roy Rogers’ tasteful slide guitar, make for a enjoyable mood-enhancing listen. There are inexpensive CD copies available, but the new 45rpm vinyl double-LP is also available on Ebay from a few international dealers. Right now the lowest price is $54.99.
