We are giving away three (3) pairs of tickets to see the Catskills Mountains-based band The Felice Brothers on Wednesday, September 29th at the Echo. The show is 18+ and usually $15 in advance or $17 at the door. As I’ve said before, if you haven’t seen them before, they put on quite the whiskey drinkin’, boot stompin’, clap along and hoot and hollerin’ sort of show. Seriously not to be missed. To win tix, e-mail whenyouawakela @ gmail.com (subject: Felice Brothers) and tell us who your favorite brotherly group is (I’m automatically disqualifying the Everly Brothers, Louvin Brothers and Oasis for mega-obviousness reasons). Include your first and last name in the email. Three winners will be picked and contacted.

John Prine and Old Crow Medicine Show – Lake Marie
Few festival acts nowadays bring out proper/worthy surprise guests to perform with them. At this summer’s Bonnaroo in Manchester, TN, the only two artists to do so were Mumford and Sons and John Prine, who both brought out Nashville, Tennessee’s Old Crow Medicine Show, a band that was not even scheduled to play. Luckily, there’s footage of the band performing with John Prine. For a mega-surprise moment, Prine ended up bringing out an additional surprise guest, Kris Kristofferson, for the last song, “Paradise.” Check it out after the jump.

Vinyl Picks: a weekly column were we recommend three vinyl records that every When You Awake reader should own. First up, we have Waylon Jennings with his 1973 album Honky Tonk Heroes. With the exception of two songs, the tunes were all written or co-written by the great Billy Joe Shaver and is an outlaw classic. The auction is set to end on September 29th and currently has zero bids at a $7.84 starting price. Click here to check it out.

Next up, we have Willie Nelson with his 1973 album, Shotgun WIllie. The record was his first for Atlantic and features a number of original tunes alongside covers of Leon Russell’s “A Song For You” and Bush and Stroud’s “Whiskey River.” Ebay has the Buy It Now option set up (no bidding required) for $8.00. Click here to check it out.

Lastly, we have Bobby Bare’s 1980 record, Down and Dirty. As the title would suggest the record is rough, rowdy and recorded live. The guitar solo in the middle of “Goin’ Back To Texas (One More Horses Ass)” is worth buying the entire record. Seriously—it’s dangerously good. Amazon is currently selling used copies starting at $5.95. Click here to check it out.

Childhood friends Cydney Morris and Dallas Wand started Stone Cold Fox in 2009, and in that short amount of time have been churning out nothing but beautiful piece after handmade piece. Lady Bonita, their Summer 2010 collection pays tribute to Gypsies, flamenco dancers, and sexy senoritas.

Hand dyed, hand sewn, and extremely limited, these gorgeous pieces are well worth the price-tag. The girls will even create custom pieces based on their designs if you want something completely your own. You can find their earlier collections at Revolve Clothing or Planet Clothing and many more soon to come. I have a feeling despite wanting to keep their company small, they’re about to blow up big time. P.s. We recommend listening to Warren Zevon’s “Carmelita” while browsing their collection (just ignore the whole heroin part and focus on the beautiful Mexican girl, Carmelita). More picture are after the jump.

Ryan Bingham- Mr. Dylan’s Hard Rain
Ryan Bingham performing his tune “My. Dylan’s Hard Rain” live at the studios of KVET-FM in Austin, Texas on June 4, 2009. Bingham, who won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “The Wearied Kind” from the film Crazy Heart, will be opening for the one and only Willie Nelson at the Greek Theatre tonight, Friday, September 24th.

Can’t You Hear Me Callin’, Richard D. Smith’s biography based on the longtime affair between bluegrass legend Bill Monroe and his mistress Bessie Lee Mauldin, is getting the bio-pic treatment. Peter Sarsgaard is set to play the Kentucky native and his wife, actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, will play Mauldin. Tim Robbins is also set to appear in the project. Shooting starts in March of next year at locations in and around North Carolina and Tennessee. Screenwriter Callie Khouri — who wrote Thelma & Louise, among others — penned the screenplay and her husband, music producer T-Bone Burnett (O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Crazy Heart, Walk the Line), will be doing the music. With all of that talent attached to the project, this is definitely a film to keep an eye out for. Stay tuned to When You Awake for more details.
