RIP Charlie Louvin
Filed under: News | Posted by:

The great Charlie Louvin passed away this morning at 1:30 am after a long fight with pancreatic cancer. The 83-year-old singer began performing when he was a teenager with his brother Ira as the Louvin Brothers. Their rich, two part harmonies influenced everyone from the Everly Brothers to the Byrds and Emmylou Harris. We had the honor of seeing Charlie Louvin perform two years ago at Spaceland in Los Angeles. It was honestly one of the most surreal musical nights of my life complete with power outages, a very drunken Lucinda Williams, and an all acoustic sing-a-long version of  the Louvin Brother’s classic, “The Christian Life”. You can read  my full review here, but basically, it was an unforgettable night in the presence of a legend who will be greatly missed. RIP Charlie Louvin!

Rest in Peace. I was at that show at Spaceland and felt it was a great experience. I also attended a show he did several years back at the Mint. He had incredible energy and the songs were great live. I find it fitting that I just yesterday went through and played his last four albums in a row.

The Louvin Brothers used to tour with Elvis. Gram Parsons was also greatly influenced by the Louvins, as were the Byrds on Sweetheart of the Rodeo.
