Doc Watson has passed away at the age of 89. I had the honor of watching Doc perform in 2008 at the Bristol Rhythm and Roots Festival in Bristol, Tennessee. Here’s the extremely lofi video I took of his performance. Needless to say, he was a brilliant musician and will be greatly missed. RIP Doc!
Jonathan Wilson and band will be playing a very special show for family and friends tonight in Venice, CA at the Del Monte Speakeasy. The intimate show is presented by Farmer Dave Scher and will be the band’s last gig before heading oversees on their European tour with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. There’s no cover but space is very limited so make sure you get there early! Doors are at 9. Music starts at 9:30. The Del Monte Speakeasy is 21+ and located at 52 Windward Ave., Venice, CA.

Langhorne Slim- Sweet Olive Tree
Langhorne Slim singing “Sweet Olive Tree” for a Crackerfarm video in Nashville, Tennessee in February 2012. Slim’s gearing up for the release of his latest record, The Way We Move (out June 5th). You can pre-order now and receive an instant download if you just can’t wait until then. Slim’s always worth it.
You should have been there. And by “there” we mean the celebrated Troubadour club in West Hollywood, CA, on Wednesday May, 9th, where Jonathan Wilson and his band played an impressive set that lasted nearly two and a half hours. Wilson — in a threadbare blue plaid shirt that made us think he probably has piles of laundry waiting for him back home in nearby Laurel Canyon — was in truly fine form, looking a little like Neil Young circa 1971 whilst offering up selections from last year’s vaunted When You Awake fave Gentle Spirit, along with a handful of new songs we can’t wait to hear again. Read more after the jump.

The Bee Gees-I’ve Gotta Get A Message To You
The Bee Gees (with Robin on lead vocals) performing “I’ve Gotta Get A Message To You” live on The Midnight Special on June 22, 1973. Robin passed away yesterday morning, Sunday May 20th, at the age of 62 following a lengthy battle with cancer. RIP Robin!
When You Awake’s own Mitra Khayyam will be spinning country, rockabilly and roots hits for a new night called Country My Ass this Sunday, May 20th at Footsies in Highland Park. Expect songs about mama, trains, trucks, prison, and getting drunk. Kicks off at 9 pm. Definitely sounds like our kind of night.
