Merle Haggard giving a tour of San Quentin Prison and performing “Amazing Grace” with the San Quentin Chapel Choir in 1971. More info from the video: “Merle Haggard spent three years in San Quentin Prison from 1957 through 1960. In March of 1971, Merle with his wife Bonnie Owens and his band The Strangers returned to San Quentin to record some tracks for a live gospel album entitled The Land Of Many Churches. Merv Griffin sent a film crew to document this event for a special episode of The Merv Griffin Show. The show never materialized and the footage was never edited.¬†Forty-one years later, the original films were found in the vaults housing the Merv Griffin archives.”
