Maybe it’s not what you’d expect, a country/folk music blog to do a tribute post in memory of the unfortunate passing of Apple founder, Steve Jobs, but we at When You Awake recognize the passion he put into his life and his work ushering us into the technological world we know and love today. We are sad that his visionary flame has been snuffed, but will always remember him as we carry on down the road. So to pay tribute, we’d like to share this video of Joan Baez, who Jobs reportedly dated, singing a tune by Jobs’ favorite musician, Bob Dylan.  A Bob Dylan fan and a tech genius? That’s the type of person we at When You Awake can always get behind. RIP Steve.

MusicFOG brings us this Chuck Mead video (who was included on the Thirty Tigers playlist we posted last year.) Chuck is a little more Nashville-popular than we normally feature on When You Awake, but this song just kills so bad that you gotta love it and wanna wail right along with him on the chorus.

It is with great sorrow that we mourn the passing of Clarence Clemons, Springsteen’s other half, E Street’s saxophone crooner, The Big Man. Clarence was a core member of the E Street Band from 1972 on, has recorded with the likes of Aretha Franklin, Jackson Browne, The Grateful Dead and has appeared as an actor in numerous films and tv shows. Check out our favorite Clarence film cameo, after the jump. Rest in peace Clarence.

Justin brought out Ben Sollee at Bonnaroo a few weeks ago to perform a slowed down version of “Mama’s Eyes” off of his 2008 album Midnight at the Movies. As Justin said that day, “I’m one of those dogs you can’t keep under the porch,” and we tend to agree with him.

As we all travel somewhere or have someone travel towards us this festive season, Sam Amidon’s video for his song “Saro” off of 2008’s All Is Well comes to mind. It combines classic moving pictures of folks traversing the mighty countryside as Americans young and old have done for centuries. And now, be it by delayed plane or covered wagon (which may indeed be faster), we’re still truckin’ on. So good luck from When You Awake with all your holiday travels (and here’s to hoping Editor-in-Chief Jody makes it back to the States from England today as her flight has been delayed for 4 days and counting…).
