Here is one of the episodes of the 8-episode television special, Waylon Jennings and Friends. This particular segment features Waylon leading a gang of some of the most talented country music singers and songwriters of all time in a loving tribute to Sue Brewer, the country music patron who used to host guitar pulls at her house, aka the”Boar’s Nest” (read more about Sue here).

The amount of talent in that one room is absolutely astonishing and it is seriously NOT TO BE MISSED.

Van Morrison: Under Review 1964-1974 is a 2 hour documentary film which covers the musician’s albums during that period, from the formation of Them through to his solo records Astral Weeks, Moondance, St. Dominic’s Preview, Tupelo Honey, Veedon Fleece and It’s Too Late To Stop Now. There’s loads of great early film footage and interview snippets in there that are definitely worth a watch.  Enjoy!

Bill Monroe: Father of Bluegrass Music is a great documentary from 1993 about the life of Monroe and his music. There’s some incredible live footage of Monroe in this documentary including several clips that show his talents as an old time mountain dancer. You have not lived until you see Bill Monroe dancing up a storm on a New York city subway (around the 18:00 minute mark)! The film also features interviews about Monroe with the likes of Emmylou Harris, Jerry Garcia, Marty Stuart, and former Bluegrass Boys Del McCoury and Peter Rowan. Bluegrass Country Soul is a 1972 documentary about the bluegrass festival that took place in the summer of 1971 in Springs Camp, North Carolina. It shows the evolution of bluegrass at the time with performances by the more traditional acts; Jimmy Martin, The Osbourne Brothers, Ralph Stanley (with the young duo of Keith Whitley and Ricky Skaggs backing him up), Roy Acuff and Mac Wiseman alongside the upcoming “new-grass bands” like the Earl Scruggs Review, the Country Gentlemen, JD Crowe, and the Bluegrass Alliance (which would later become the New Grass Revival). Going Home is a 1993 documentary about Fleetwood Mac that features interviews with all of the members plus rare footage of the band from the 1970s,  including home movies, rehearsing and recording in the studio, Grammy Awards ceremonies and live performances of “Over My Head”, “Landslide”, “I’m so Afraid”, “Dreams”, “Don’t Stop” & “Never Going Back Again”. Following on the hippie theme that we seem to have going this week, here’s the 2006 Swiss documentary Hippie Masala, directed by filmmaker Ulrich Grossenbacher and anthropologist Damaris Lüthi, that looks at the “aging flower children who, after fleeing Western civilization, found a new home in India.” In the film’s own words: “In the 1960s and 1970s thousands of hippies journeyed East in the search for enlightenment, free drugs or a ‘pure’ life. Indian peasants assumed that a severe drought in the West was the reason for their migration. India’s holy men saw it, more accurately, as a search for spirituality. Most moved back to their home countries after a few months or years.
