Here’s a show that is just too good to pass up. Tonight, the legendary Hot Club of Cowtown will be making a rare Southern California appearance as part of the Culver City summer music festival. The best part? This show is absolutely free! It takes place in front of city hall in Culver City. Gates open at 4:30pm and the band goes on at 7pm. Click here for more information. If you’re not familiar with the incredible western swing stylings of these Austin based virtuosos, let this video serve as an introduction….

The American Cinematheque is screening a number of classic music films this weekend at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica as part of their Wild Things: A Celebration of Rock Documentaries & Mods & Rockers series. TONIGHT: Double Feature: Monterey Pop, 1968, Pennebaker Films, 78 min. Directed by D.A. Pennebaker. This salute to the 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival revives the world-changing excitement brought on by the likes of Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, The Who and others.
Wattstax, 1973, Sony Repertory, 104 min. Dir. Mel Stuart. This landmark 1972 concert teamed soul music with Black Pride – and was dubbed the “black Woodstock.” The film presents a slew of great Stax Records artists performing at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, including Rufus & Carla Thomas, the Staple Singers, Albert King, Johnnie Taylor Kim Weston the Bar-Kays and closing act Isaac Hayes. We also experience the churches, shops and streets of Watts, just seven years after the race riots that scarred the city.

Tomorrow is a big ol’ day for When You Awake. First off, I have been asked to DJ at a charity spin class lead by Corey Weiss where ALL of the proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society. The class is open to everyone (whether or not you have previous spinning experience) and there is a recommended donation of $25 to reserve a bike. The class is from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. More details can be found here.
Later in the evening, I will take up the turntables once again for an event that I have been anxiously awaiting for for weeks! Please join YNM Management and I at the Redwood Bar and Grill in downtown Los Angeles for Summer Holidaze. Our favorite San Diegoians The Smart Brothers are making the trek up, alongside Los Angelenos Hi Ho Silver Oh and New York’s James Apollo. It’s $5 to get in and free for folks who have an LA Record 100 card in their possession. And what is this Holidaze theme you may ask? Well, the Redwood will be serving up holiday-themed drink specials and each band will perform at least one festive tune to keep your spirits high throughout the night. Christmas in July, why not?
Head on over to the Echo tonight to check out Jackshit, which includes Pete Thomas (a founding member of Elvis Costello’s Attractions), Davey Faragher (ex-Cracker along with bass and vocals for Elvis Costello) and Val McCallum. Head over to the Henry Fonda Theater tonight, Wednesday, June 23, to catch Josh Ritter and the Carolina Chocolate Drops. Tix are $22.50 and they are still available online. Ritter, who’s currently touring in support of his new record, So Runs The World Away (out now via Pytheas Records), just released an absolutely beautiful video for his track “The Curse”, a tune which tells the tale of a love story between an archeologist and her mummy. The video was created by Ritter’s drummer, Liam Hurley, who also happens to be a master puppeteer. Be sure to watch the video below, and if you see me at the show, say hello!
