For the latest edition of our Twang Series, I chose to pay tribute to the great Van Morrison. The mix features covers of Morrison-penned tunes by the likes of The Band, Jeff Buckley and Maria McKee. We also have a hard to find version of “He Ain’t Give You None” by deep soul singer Freddie Scott and Japanese Psych band Finger’s cover of “Gloria.” Who should we feature next in our Twang Series? Let us know in the comments after the jump.

Everly Brothers Go Twang

everly bros

For the latest in our Twang series, I decided to pay homage to the Everly Brothers. The mixtape feature tunes written or made famous by the Brothers and performed by the likes of Bob Dylan, Gram Parsons with Emmylou Harris, The Beach Boys and more. I’ve actually been working on this mix for a couple of weeks but couldn’t find a satisfactory version of one of my very favorite songs, “Let It Be Me”, to end it. I had mediocre, half-hearted versions by George Harrison, Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan among others, but it wasn’t until I found Miss Linda Jones’ take on the tune that I decided the mix was officially complete. For pure emotional, “I’m gonna lay it out on the table” pleading power, I’d put Jones’ version close up there with a tune like Otis Redding’s “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long.” Check it out after the jump. And just for fun, here’s the Everly Brothers performing Merle Haggard’s “Mama Tried.”

Bee Gees Go Twang

I have to admit that when someone first told me to get the Bee Gee’s First record, I was mighty skeptical. I had grown up seeing images of the Bee Gees during their “Stayin’ Alive” phase (see example one and example two), and so associated them solely with catchy, but overplayed disco anthems, feathered hair and tight white jeans. In actuality, however, the brothers Gibb were top notch songwriters who penned tunes that were covered by the likes of Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers, Nina Simone, Dusty Springfield, Elvis Presley and more. So, I decided to show the Australian brothers a little love and put together this ol’ mixtape. As the saying goes here at When You Awake, if it’s good enough for Gram, it’s good enough for me. By the way, I’m still on the lookout for good covers of “Got To Get A Message To You” and “In My Own Time.” If you have any, let me know!
